A gunite inground pool installed by Brown's Pools & Spas can provide a virtually limitless number of possible design elements and features. Your pool will reflect your priorities and recreational personality. While a gunite pool offers innumerable design possibilities, the basic method and process for installation remains the same regardless of design. Here’s what to expect as your dream pool is created in your backyard.
Design & Permitting Working with our design staff to create a gunite pool design right for your yard and your needs is the first step toward a successful pool construction process. Once a design in established it will need to be approved and permitted by the city or county building department responsible for your neighborhood. Brown’s Pool always obtains the needed permits as a part of the construction agreement. |
Excavation & Plumbing After laying out the pool shape in the yard, Brown’s in-house excavation staff breaks ground on the pool hole. Unlike a vinyl pool, a gunite pool hole has no over-dig and will not be backfilled, so the hole mimics the final pool shape. PVC plumbing lines are stubbed in once the pool shape has been established. The plumbing design is created according to hydraulic calculations, ensuring that pipe sizing and location is optimal for the pool’s size and design elements. All lines are run to the designated location for the pool’s filtration equipment and controls. |
Steel Reinforcement Next a skeleton of steel reinforcing bars is expertly knitted throughout the entire pool structure. This web of rebar provides the structural strength that will bind all of the pool surfaces together and give the pool a backbone of support that will last for many decades. Along with the rebar, forms are set in place along the perimeter of the pool in preparation for the addition of the gunite. |
Gunite Installation The pool is now ready for the most unique and important part of the building process. The concrete mix, called gunite, is installed into the pool using a pressurized pump system. Called “shooting the gunite”, this method imbeds the thick gunite mix into the rebar framing and allows the installer to build the material up on itself to form the walls and other vertical elements of the pool design. As soon as the gunite has been shot on the walls it is cut and smoothed with hand tools to form the final shape of the pool walls. |
Ceramic Tile & Coping The body of the pool now constructed with cured gunite, the finish surfaces begin to be added, starting with the ceramic tile accent border at the pool waterline. Each tile is hand-laid and grouted to form a level and uniform border at the water’s edge. Most gunite pools include a rock coping, the front border to the pool deck, or other stacked stone element such as water features or attached spas. Our skilled craftsmen install these elements at this stage of the process. |
Decking Setup & Installation As with most elements of a gunite pool, the pool’s decking can be designed to suit a multitude of styles and configurations. Regardless of the finish surface chosen, forms must be laid for the outer perimeter of the deck, and grade, drainage, grounding, and reinforcement grids set in place. This groundwork provides the base where a beautiful layer of flagstone, colored concrete, or pavers can be installed. |
Plaster Interior Finishing While the gunite material forms the structure, strength, and shape of the pool, it still needs a coating to make it smooth and watertight. A layer of plaster applied with a spray gun and hand-troweled and smoothed provides the final surface for the pool interior. The plaster may be tinted and mixed with a quartz or pebble aggregate, and as the plaster finish work is done this texture is exposed and show the final coloring of the pool surface. Typically one day after the plaster sets the whole surface is acid washed and then the pool is filled with water. |
Finish Up & Orientation Brown’s provides the initial chemical treatments to the pool water. Now that the pool is operational and the work complete an orientation appointment is scheduled. Our staff will walk you through the operation of each element of the pool and answer any questions. From there our store and service staff is always available to assist you with the products and knowledge needed to care for your new pool.
