What is a "mil?"

A true mil is an exact measurement equal to .001 inches. This is not the same as a gauge measurement. A liner "gauge" is an inexact measurement of the liner's thickness. Doughboy liners are all rated at their true mil measurement. Typically, a thicker mil should last longer against UV rays and rougher pool bottoms. A thicker mil liner will also usually have a longer warranty.

Is the mil the most important thing to consider in a new liner?

While a true mil measurement is a good indicator of liner life, it isn't always the most important. No matter how thick a liner is, a weak seam will tear very quickly. Only Doughboy offers a 100% lifetime seam warranty. Less expensive liners can be made from recycled vinyl and may use ceramic fillers. This makes a liner less elastic and more prone to damage and tears. Doughboy liners are all made from 100% virgin vinyl.
Other very important factors in liner life are the quality of the liner installation and proper water care.
